U.S. Congressman Greg Landsman, representing Ohio’s 1st district since 2023, posted a series of statements on August 14, 2025, addressing the importance of Social Security and concerns over its potential privatization.
In his first message, Landsman emphasized the personal nature of Social Security benefits, writing, “Let’s be clear: Social Security is your money. You’ve earned it. You deserve your full benefits AND excellent service.” He continued in a subsequent post with criticism directed at those who may seek to complicate access to these services: “Why make it harder to get help? They’re hoping frustration will build…so they can privatize Social Security.”
Highlighting the historical significance of the program, Landsman added in another tweet, “For 90 years, Social Security has been a lifeline for America’s seniors. We’re fighting to keep it that way.”
Landsman was born in Cincinnati in 1976 and currently resides there. He graduated from Ohio University in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree. The congressman replaced Steve Chabot after the 2022 elections and has positioned himself as an advocate for maintaining Social Security as a public benefit for seniors.
Social Security has served as a federal safety net since its inception in 1935. Over decades, debates have arisen regarding funding mechanisms and proposals to privatize aspects of the system—issues that continue to prompt responses from lawmakers like Landsman.
