The University of Cincinnati marked the renaming of its law college as the Donald P. Klekamp College of Law during a celebration on May 15. The event brought together family, friends, alumni, students, faculty, and university leadership to honor Donald P. Klekamp for his longstanding support and generosity.

The renaming follows a $43.2 million gift from the Klekamp family in March, which is the largest donation in the college’s history. The gift will support scholarships, experiential learning opportunities, student success initiatives, and the Corporate Law Center.

University leaders including President Neville G. Pinto; Dean and Nippert Professor of Law Haider Ala Hamoudi; and Board of Trustees Chair Gregory Hartmann spoke at the ceremony about how this contribution will benefit future generations by expanding access to legal education.

Peter Klekamp said: “Today is deeply meaningful for our family because it celebrates not only my father’s accomplishments, but the kind man he is.” He continued: “My father, Donald Klekamp, believes in hard work, integrity and responsibility. He believes success means very little unless it creates opportunities for others. He loves Cincinnati and believes deeply in the power of education to transform lives. He respects the legal profession because he understands the importance of leadership, ethics and service.”

Donald Klekamp reflected on his own journey during his remarks at the event: “The thrill of dedication here today is somewhat subdued by the fact that my sweet wife, Marianne, is not here to enjoy it,” he said. “I would not be here tonight enjoying this if not for her love, support and dedication over the years,” Klekamp said. “She is as deserving as I am to receive this award.”

Klekamp also emphasized his gratitude toward his children and extended family: “The dedication to the law school in my name is significant but the love that Peter and my daughter-in-law and daughters have shown me is extremely significant.”

University officials highlighted that philanthropy such as this opens doors for students by increasing opportunity across campus life.

As a result of this gift—and celebrations like these—the university looks forward to increased student achievement both inside classrooms and beyond.
