Six NEXT Innovation Scholars from the University of Cincinnati traveled to London earlier this year to conduct field research for Molton Brown, a luxury bath, body and fragrance brand. The collaboration is part of an ongoing partnership between the university and Kao, Molton Brown’s parent company.
The project gave students the opportunity to work with a well-known British brand in its home country. Kao selected the University of Cincinnati’s NEXT Innovation Scholars because of their reputation as creative problem-solvers. The program immerses students in hands-on innovation while providing companies with insights from emerging leaders.
“Partnering with the University of Cincinnati’s NEXT Innovation Scholars provides Kao with access to some of the brightest emerging talent in innovation,” said Lindsay Stricker, new technology innovator at Kao. “Engaging with them helps Kao stay closely attuned to what is relevant, inspiring and meaningful to the next generation, enabling the company to build brands and experiences that resonate in the marketplace.”
During their visit, students were tasked by Kao with a range of research assignments aimed at understanding consumer habits and motivations. Charlie Harker, a medical sciences major at UC College of Medicine, said: “At NIS, our field work is centered on understanding the habits and motivations of individuals who interact with the brands we represent. We explored London in a way that mirrors how our clients’ consumers might perceive it, aiming to understand the factors that influence their thoughts and behaviors.”
In addition to their professional activities, scholars visited sites such as Westminster Palace and Tower Bridge while building friendships within their team. Joshua Bryant, an industrial and systems engineering major, said: “It was a blast to get to know each member of the project team individually… it’s hard to get the bond of traveling together without traveling together.” Harker added: “London is an incredible city with an abundance of things to see and do… I treasured every moment I spent exploring it.”
After returning home, scholars worked from UC’s 1819 Innovation Hub translating their experiences into strategies for Molton Brown. Elina Bishoyi, a mechanical engineering student new to NIS this year said: “NIS believed in my capabilities… giving me confidence… as well as contributing to UC on an international stage.” The group returned not only with professional experience but also strengthened skills for future projects.
