Fall Prevention Classes Return to the City

4

City of Forest Park recently issued the following announcement.

Did you know that 1 in 4 people over the age of 65 will fall this year?   Don't be one of them!

The city of Forest Park is happy to announce the return of our FREE 7-week Fall Prevention Workshops in May.  Starting May 10th, 2022, the Forest Park Fire Department and WeTHRIVE! in Forest Park will offer Stepping On at the Senior Center.

Stepping On is a high-level, evidence-based program proven to reduce falls and build confidence in older people.

A community-based, small group workshop, Stepping On was developed in Australia and tested in a randomized trial and results showed a 31% reduction in falls. Stepping On is designed specifically for people who are: 1) at risk of falling, 2) have a fear of falling, or 3) who have fallen one or more times.

Participants meet for two hours a week for seven weeks. Workshops are facilitated by trained leaders and provide a safe and positive learning experience.

Classes are highly participative; mutual support and success build participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health behaviors, reduce their risk of falls, and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

In the workshop, participants will learn:

  • To identify and remove or avoid fall hazards both inside and outside their homes
  • How vision, hearing, medication, and footwear can affect their risk of falling
  • Strength and balance exercises that they can adapt to their individual level
  • How to get back on their feet the right way after a fall
These classes will be offered at the Forest Park Senior Center (11555 Winton Road) beginning on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 and will run for 7 consecutive weeks.  Each class is 2 hours (10 am - 12pm) and will cover a different topic in a fun an engaging manner.  You must register to attend.  You can register here.  Or, if you prefer a paper registration form, download and print one off here.

For more information or to get a paper copy of the registration form,  please contact Kim Chelf (kchelf@forestpark.org, 513-595-5272).
