Offense Powers Cincinnati Past ECU, 3-0

The University of Cincinnati volleyball team hit a season-high .438 to earn a 3-0 victory over East Carolina on Friday night in Fifth Third Arena.

The Bearcats improve to 10-19 overall and 8-11 in the AAC with one conference match remaining. 

Four Bearcats hit above .400 in the sweep, including a team-high 13 kills from sophomore Shaye Eggleston. She had only one attacking error on 21 attempts for a career-high .571 hitting percentage. 

Redshirt senior Kailea Carrier (9k/.571pct), sophomore Abby Walker (9k/.412pct) and senior Madison Waters (5k/.444pct) also provided efficient offensive performances in the win. Freshman Carly Glendinning added 10 kills with only two attacking errors.

Freshman setter Caroline Endres guided the Bearcats to their best offensive output of the season with 41 assists. UC finished with 46 kills and only seven attacking errors on 89 attempts. 

Senior Payton Frederick steadied the Bearcats' defense with a team-high 19 digs – the most by a Bearcat in a three-set match this season. Cincinnati was +10 digs (40-30).

// HOW IT HAPPENED 

SET 1 | Cincinnati used a 4-0 run to lead 7-4 in the opening set. Back-to-back kills by Carrier and Eggleston forced an ECU timeout at 10-6. The Bearcats reached 15 first after a Glendinning kill, but ECU fought back to pull within two on several occasions. Cincinnati held on to win the first set, 25-22, thanks to big kills from Glendinning and Carrier. UC hit .452 in the opening stanza with 15 kills and only one attacking error on 31 attempts. 

SET 2 | Cincinnati jumped out to a 6-2 advantage thanks to five kills and a service ace by Endres. The offense continued to roll after back-to-back kills by Walker (10-5). ECU responded with a 4-1 scoring run to cut the Bearcats' lead to three (13-10). Out of the UC timeout, Cincinnati outscored ECU 6-1, taking an eight-point lead and forcing a Pirate timeout (19-11). The Bearcats scored the final five points of the set to win 25-12. UC hit .500 with 18 kills and only one attacking error on 34 attempts.

SET 3 | The Bearcats cruised to the three-set victory with a 25-21 third-set win. Waters gave UC an 8-5 lead in the early going. The Bearcats then owned a five-point advantage after a kill and ace from Eggleston, 18-13. ECU fought back to cut its deficit to two later in the set (23-21) but a kill from Carrier and solo block from Walker sealed the win.
