Congressman Greg Landsman, who represents Ohio’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on July 23, 2025, describing conditions at detention centers across the country and raising concerns about the treatment of detainees.
In his first tweet, Landsman cited statistics regarding detainees: "According to one source, 65% of those who have been detained have never been convicted of a crime. It’s insane." (July 23, 2025).
He went on to describe what he said were firsthand observations from a recent visit by three congressional colleagues: "They saw too many people crammed into cages. 32 people in each cage. No plumbing, no real electricity. They're using generators. The temperature inside reached 85 degrees. Toilets were overflowing, and the food was described as being spoiled and infested with insects." (July 23, 2025).
Landsman also referenced the expansion of such facilities nationwide and highlighted one specific center: "They're building these detention centers all over the country. I'm going to focus on one, Alligator Alcatraz. Three of my colleagues went to visit last week." (July 23, 2025).
Greg Landsman has served in Congress since replacing Steve Chabot in Ohio’s 1st district in 2023 and is currently based in Cincinnati where he was born in 1976.
He graduated from Ohio University with a BA in 1999.
